Sense and Sensibility Swing Dress in Wool

You know how sometimes you just want a nicely-fitting tailored wool dress? Yeah, like that.

Beautiful forest green crepe wool was such a pleasure to work with. No shifting, no shedding, no twisting. I got it at Denver Fabrics last winter and finally got brave enough to just use it.

I have this dress in mind for church, or winter weddings, or even funerals. And of course, Christmas, with the flower corsage it's sporting in the picture. I made the pin from a Christmas tablecloth, and a scrap of red velvet to cover a button.

I love to sew!

  1. Anna, that dress is stunningly beautiful. I wish I had a shop like Denver Fabrics close-by to me. Alas, a day or two of flying does not qualify.

  5. Anna, Saminda said it before me - you're so clever. Making things out of Christmas tablecloths - very inspiring.

  11. Anna, I hardly ever comment around here, but I just had to tell you: this dress is one of my favorites. I'm more of a short-sleeve girl myself (my family's all hot-blooded except for my mom, who freezes in July) so that is the only thing I'd change, and that just from a comfort perspective. Oh, and I'd make another one in a beautiful deep blue--cross between midnight and teal I think. If I could sew, that is. :)

  14. I check your blog occasionally.

    oh, what a lovely dress!

Hm, the flower, though seems to not fit....too casual, unfinished or slightly the wrong color.
Please forgive the pettiness. I like a jeweled pin or solid soft wool of another color.

  15. Just gorgeous, Anna, and in my very favorite color too.

Did you have to redo your duct tape dressform to accommodate your shrinking self from the running?

With the ties in the back, does this pattern also have a zipper?

  18. Sally, yes, I'm on dressform 2.0 and need to do another one.

I actually omitted the ties from the dress--I like the less fussy lines in back. It zips up the side with an invisible zipper.

Hanna, camera is a konica minolta.

    Thanks for your comments, everyone!

  20. The dress is gorgeous! You always inspire me to learn to how to really sew. I would love to know how to create clothing, but for now I only know enough to replace buttons and make small repairs. I have decided to start small and learn embroidery. I have been just practicing on old cloth, but when I embroider my first piece, I will post it!

  21. Lovely! Did you know Sense & Sensibility has gone digital? You can get all the Regency Patterns and the Edwardian Apron Pattern as ePatterns?

Haven't tried the apron ePattern yet but can't imagine that they are "less" quality than the paper patterns.
