Vegetables for the Chowder

It's perversely satisfying to get dinner when there's not really much in the fridge or pantry. Tonight I used up the last bits of vegetables from the crisper drawers, sauteeing them with a few strips of bacon, then simmering them in broth with some chopped potatoes. All became a chowder when I added creamy milk and the scraps of several blocks of cheese.

Grocery shopping tomorrow, for sure.

  1. This is so satisfying isn't it-- to make something tasty from not much and avoid bits of waste in the process-- well done!

  2. Yes, there's always something you can make, with seemingly very little in the house. I enjoy it.

  4. I love making creative soup like that! We eat soup and bread sometimes twice a day around here in the winter.

I'm going to make clam chowder sometime this week. I made fumet for the first time ever when I bought fish with their heads still on (slightly gross); I hope it gives an extra depth when I make the chowder.

  5. Hi Anna, I love it too. I also love it when the only food we have comes straight from the garden with a few base ingredients from the cupboard and not a shop visit in sight. Tonight I am making dinner and dessert from a rather large zucchini from our garden, eggs from the chooks and our base cupboard ingredients. I also wanted to say how much I love reading your blog. It is inspiring. Liz.

  6. I would also like to add that you're a good chopper - nice and uniform. I'm not so.

  7. And I would have added a tin of creamed corn as I always have a tin or two on my shelves as a staple.

    Sounds yummy your way too.

  8. LOL...I totally *get* this post! Too funny! It reveals something about me...I am in this situation a LOT! With nearly three teenage boys in the house and a little wispy girl with an appetite that does not match...I often run out of food and have to SHOP! :)

    Thanks for the chuckle.

Your blog is so beautiful...I have enjoyed visiting here the last little while.

    Many blessings,
    Camille
