Africa I

Bella and the Composer spent two weeks in west Africa to meet up with a small group of nationals who work at everything from education to evangelism to school-building, health work, agriculture, orphan care, small business development . . . the list goes on . . . traveling with them to document their efforts and help to tell their story.

Giles met them on the way at the airport in Zurich (how cool is it to rendezvous in Zurich, I ask?). Most of the camera work you will see is his.

I won't attempt to caption these images--just enjoy them as beautiful glimpses of an incredible trip.

  1. Oh, my - the photo of the children lined up is my favorite. But the one of the church was very touching. And the lean-to with everybody dressed up so nice. Lovely photos.

  4. Thanks for sharing Anna - such lovely photos! I especially love the simplicity of their church services - same God, different setting - O for a thousand tongues to sing...

  7. My husband was an M.K. who grew up in Senegal, West Africa. He is taking our two oldest girls to visit his brother there in April.

It is going to be a life changing trip for them!

  8. Beautiful! Looks like the trip of a lifetime . Of all the pictures, I had to smile at the one with the Fanta on the table. We are in Germany and Fanta is ever present here too. Americans might imagine Pepsi or Coke to be the universal beverages. Not so. : ) Very cool to see a silly constant like that appear across cultures.

  10. Hello! I work at a center that sounds similar in Mozambique - we are a children's center, provide school, clinic, church, evangelism, pastor's school, etc. So this post is right up my alley - I hope you share even more photos! Would love to know more about what prompted the trip and what they experienced. Blessings on your family!

  11. Well done, Giles! These photographs are quietly beautiful, wonderful observations of life. I particularly love the second one (the portrait, basically--it's my favorite!), the one of the children lined up and the church. Lovely.

  12. Oh Africa how I love thee...east or west, north or south...what joy you bring me.

I have discovered a church near me that offers a Friday night worship service. The pastor is from Ghana...what joy it is to listen and learn along with the handful of others that gather there. He is such a joy filled man, it just seeps out as he shares...love that!

    thanks for sharing.

  13. Lilian -- the worship music is always amazing. Unfortunately when they have amplification it's also ear-splitting loud, but when it's just voices and hands in less developed (no electricity) areas, it's heart-rendingly beautiful.

Kim@Starry Sky -- while growing up I spent several summers in Germany (my mother was German). Fanta was a favorite, but I prefer the more generic Limonade.

  14. When I looked at the lean-to church, the first thing that came to my mind was the traditional hymn "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms". Then I noticed the little girl with her purse, how sweet!
What beautiful pictures, looking forward to more.
