Felix Birding

Felix is taking his Christmas trip this week--several days of birding along the Texas coast, where many migrating birds have landed in exhausted gratitude after flying over the Gulf.

These photos are so evocative to me of flat, salty land and quiet air.

Everything goes into his field journal--good thing we picked up the new Prismacolors this week. This year's new colors are perfect for nature drawing--all soft browns and pale blues.

A hummingbird.

Yesterday they stumbled on videographers from Cornell University taking footage for their archives. Felix got along with them really well.

I am visiting your blog by way of homestead blogger. Your blog was a link on someones blog. I have to say that your pictures are beautiful, so much so that I have now linked your blog to mine, LOL. I hope you don't mind if I visit often.
Thanks,
Kitty

How long has your son been into birds? And does he plan on making that his career?

Can you explain about your christmas trips? They sound like a wonderful idea.

One of my best friends lives in the Corpus Christi, TX area. She is always telling me about the beautiful birds there.

She takes her camera to an island quite often...can't think of the name of it right now.

I think the Christmas trips are a wonderful idea, too.

As a Texan that has always lived on the Gulf Coast I can say that the migration celebration is wonderful. So glad he is able to experience it.

I lived in Texas all of my life, until six years ago when we moved to Virginia. The Gulf Coast was always a favorite get away.

We've had quite a few birds returning to our feeder here this week. My little ladies share this interest with their father, who is an avid bird enthusiast.

I had to share with you, that due to your inspiration, I picked up my first Grace Livingston Hill book at the library today, Beauty for Ashes. They only had four or five on the shelf, but perhaps some of the other titles were checked out. I plan to begin reading it tonight, I'm looking forward to seeing how I like it. I'll let you know. You make them sound simply wonderful!

Thanks for the inspiration!

I think it's so neat that your son loves birding so much! Ü

I found a broken bird eggshell in our planter :(
It was a beautiful blue with brown speckles...
I do so love that color combo...

Wouldn't it be wonderful to bind his sketches into book form? He would have such a special way to preserve all his work.

I just love how homeschooling allows our children the freedom to pursue their passions.

Mrs. Mackenzie--
We often give our children trips for Christmas gifts. Because only one child is going, we can do something they have a special interest in, and we can spend time alone with them. We've given Christmas trips for birding, for a Gilbert and Sullivan at the Chicago Lyric Opera (with backstage access--good thing the Composer had dated the soprano!), a major zoo, symphony performances, Cameroon, and elsewhere. They generally *don't* take place right at Christmas.
